Studio Visits: In the Posthuman Atelier is a speculative exhibition and catalogue project in which a human curator visits the studios of fifty AI artists. The artists are synthetic. The studios are generated. The catalogue structure is familiar enough to produce belief, which is part of the problem the work investigates.

The project uses MidJourney v4 for the studio images and GPT-3 for the names and statements of the AI artists. The curatorial frame is mine. I am interested in what happens when the art world’s systems of meaning; studio mythology, artist statement, catalogue language, installation documentation; are applied to entities that do not exist in any conventional sense. It is a Duchampian Boite en Libre for a (technically) nonexistent show of nonexistent artists.

The work is not a celebration of autonomous AI genius. It is a project about mediation, authorship, plausibility and the cultural machines that make artists legible.
