The calligraphy orks come from my interest in automatic drawing, asemic writing and the possibility that the hand carries structures that the mind does not fully know. The works draw from Japanese and Persian writing, from my earlier Alien Calligraphies, and from artists such as Verostko, Molnar, Kuniyama and Arp.

Personal Taxonomies extends this into machine learning. I produced large bodies of calligraphic marks and fed them into GAN systems to see whether a machine could find consistencies in my own mark-making. In that sense, the work treats the artist as an archive and the archive as a dataset.

The project is both computational and introspective. It asks where gesture lives: in the hand, the eye, the code, the data, the machine, or in a pattern that only becomes visible when all of those systems meet.
