AI / synthetic culture

AI Art

A body of work that treats machine learning as material and as subject — pattern, image, labor and the politics of the synthetic.

I work with AI as a cyborg algorist: not as a machine that makes pictures for me, but as a collaborator whose presence is disclosed rather than hidden. The interesting questions are never ‘can it generate an image?’ but who authored it, what it was trained on, what labor and what energy it consumed, and what it quietly assumes about culture. Non-concealment of the machine’s hand is, for me, a condition of integrity.

The AI works run along several lines. GAN Carpet / Forbidden trains machine learning on Persian, Azeri and Armenian carpet traditions and treats the GAN as a circumvention apparatus — a way of moving pattern across cultural blockades. Studio Visits: In the Posthuman Atelier imagines a curator touring the studios of fifty AI artists. These 7000 Oaks Don’t Exist turns on Beuys, NFTs and the carbon cost of synthetic images. Machine Drawings uses learning systems to probe gesture and deep structure, and the Digital Tapestries weave AI imagery back into the material, slow logic of the Jacquard loom.

Taken together they form a sustained, critical engagement with synthetic culture: the machine read through theory rather than hype, and authorship treated as hybrid, situated and accountable.
