New Memory Rescue

New Memory Rescue is a book about what digital culture forgets. Files rot, platforms die, and whole bodies of work slide out of the record while the institutions meant to keep them are still arguing about formats. The book treats that loss as a curatorial emergency rather than an inevitability.

A central case is the art of early handheld devices and PDAs — small screens, styluses, infrared beaming and desktop sync — almost none of which survived its platforms. Recovering it means media archaeology: rebuilding emulators, salvaging data and reconstructing the gestures the work assumed. From there the argument widens to the fragility of media memory in general, and to the case that the small, the portable and the low-resolution deserve the same care as the monumental.
