Sound
The audible layer of the practice: signal, noise, sonification and listening as a way of reading media systems.
Sound runs underneath most of my work as signal before it is anything else. Before an image is a picture it is a transmission; before a transmission is meaningful it is noise shaped into a channel. The sound work gathers the pieces where that layer becomes the work itself: encoded images played as audio, field recordings of mediated space, generative and algorithmic audio, and the sonification of data and pattern.
I treat sound the way I treat low resolution — as a constrained channel that reveals structure precisely because it cannot carry everything. A Slow Scan TV frame is also a sound file. A woven pattern can be read as a sequence. A landscape scan has a rhythm. Listening becomes another way of reading the same media systems the rest of the practice looks at.
Much of this material exists as the audible side of other projects: the encoded transmissions behind the SSTV works, the ambiences of the VR and scanning pieces, and the audio of the NPTProjects collaborations. Collected here, it stands on its own as a body of listening.
